Meaningful storytelling during a time of disruption

For this semester, I have centred my work on meaningful storytelling during a time of disruption. This disruption speaks to both the disruptions  brought forth from technological transformations and the Covid-19 pandemic. Within this theme, I unpack and shed light on patterns of media consumption during the pandemic, non-profit work, conversations by South African families during lockdown and my relationship with my 100-year old grandmother, particularly this time.

The following pieces constitute my Capstone project:

Dinner Table Conversations, an audio series that wishes to shed light on the conversations South African Families have had during the Covid-19 pandemic; these conversations point to the notions of family, re-evaluation and psychological wellbeing.

Profile video of my grandmother, Nolda van Geuns. This video serves as an exploration of and testament to my 100-year-old grandmother. It also seeks to document her experience of lockdown.

Patterns of media consumption during the pandemic in South Africa. This data-driven story evaluates patterns of media consumption during lockdown; it wishes to unpack some of the reasons for these patterns as people try to make sense of their current society.

Promotional video for Bright Start. Bright Start is a non-profit organisation in Hout Bay, Cape Town. With funding from sponsors, it facilitates students' schooling from pre-primary to high school. Bright Start also focuses on helping students receive a wholistic schooling experience through access to mentorship, health-care services and extra-curricular activities. This promotional video sheds light on the Bright Start students' experiences and the work of the organisation; the overall goal of the video is to attract more sponsors. Finally, the video was created during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Everyday CameraEvery Day Camera is a "collaborative project that seeks to communicate through the shared love of visuals." During this semester, I have contributed to its Instagram page, where most photographs shed light on everyday life during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Reflective essay on meaningful storytelling during a time of disruption. This essay serves as both an academic and a reflective evaluation of storytelling during a time marked by technological transformation and the Covid-19 pandemic. It draws on some of the other components of the Capstone Project in its assessment.
